China puts cruise missile bombers on 'high alert' amid North Korea fears

National flags of Japan and the U.S. are seen in front of a monitor showing U.S. President Donald Trump at a foreign exchange trading company in Tokyo Japan

US officials say tougher sanctions could include an oil embargo, a global ban on North Korea's airline, intercepting cargo ships and punishing Chinese banks doing business with Pyongyang. Another U.S. official said the alert status was not restricted to one particular region of China but spread out across the country.

China has placed some of its bomber fleet on heightened alert status, according to USA officials, but it is unclear what may have prompted the move.

"When we requested to restore the agreed language that was of political importance and expressed commitment to continue to work on the draft. the USA delegation without providing any explanations canceled the work on the draft", the Russian U.N. mission said in a statement on Wednesday.

China has put its cruise missile-capable bombers on "high alert" amid fears of a pre-emptive strike by North Korea's rogue regime, USA officials warned today.

It comes as Trump warned North Korea that it needs to keep its nuclear ambitions in check, telling dictator Kim Jong-un he has "got to behave".

The North held a show of military might in a parade over the weekend and tested another missile on Sunday, which the Pentagon said blew up nearly immediately after launch. Syria's state news agency has even referred to the U.S. as a "common adversary" of Syria and North Korea.

North Korea has warned that it will carry out a nuclear strike against the United States if it is provoked.

"I have absolute confidence that he will be trying very hard" to handle North Korea, Trump said of Xi.

"When we requested to restore the agreed language that was of political importance and expressed commitment to continue to work on the draft, the USA delegation without providing any explanations cancelled the work on the draft", the Russian U.N. mission said in a statement.

"Throughout the thousands of years of relations, Korea has never been part of China, and this is a historical fact that is recognized internationally and something no one can deny", Cho June-hyuck, a South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman, said Thursday.

The leaders of Syria and North Korea both inherited their positions from their fathers: Hafez al-Assad and Kim Jong Il.

"The era of strategic patience is over and while all options are on the table, President [Donald] Trump is determined to work closely with Japan, with South Korea, with all our allies in the region and with China to achieve a peaceable resolution and the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula", Pence said in Tokyo before lunch with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Abe said that it was a "matter of paramount importance for us to seek diplomatic efforts as well peaceable settlements of the issue".

In the meantime, Trump has reportedly settled on a "maximum pressure and engagement" strategy on North Korea, which is mainly about enlisting the help of Beijing to put pressure on Pyongyang. "They've all been outplayed by this gentleman and we'll see what happens", Trump noted.

The US, meanwhile, has conducted missile defense drills with the South Korean and Japanese navies, sent its newest F-35 stealth fighters to train in South Korea, flown B-1 bombers to South Korea, and just Thursday commenced "Max Thunder", billed as the second-largest military flying exercise between US and South Korean forces.

Seoul has long anxious about losing its voice in global efforts to deal with North Korea's nuclear threat - something local media have termed "Korea Passing".

Han told the BBC that North Korea believed its nuclear weapons "protect" it from the threat of USA military action.
