British PM May says June election result 'not certain' despite front-runner status

Full moon sets behind the banking district in Frankfurt am Main western Germany

Green Party co-leader Caroline Lucas said Mr Corbyn was letting down Britain by refusing to back a second referendum.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron accused Mrs May of "bottling" and said broadcasters had a "moral duty" to go ahead with the showdowns even if she fails to take part.

May's Conservative Party holds a slim majority in Parliament's lower House of Commons and May is banking on gaining a greater share of the seats to make Brexit a smoother transition for her government.

After debating the motion put forward by May in the House of Commons, 522 of the 650 sitting MPs voted in favour of the June 8 election, passing the threshold of two-thirds needed to approve the plan.

May is hoping to increase the parliamentary majority for her ruling Conservatives, strengthening her negotiating position ahead of tough talks with the European Union over the Brexit process.

"What the British people - what the people of the United Kingdom - voted for previous year was for the UK to leave the European Union".

May ruled out participating in televised debates with other leaders.

Mr Blair said the Daily Mail's "Crush the Saboteurs" headline the day after Mrs May called the election revealed her true intentions.

May's Conservatives now hold 330 House of Commons seats and Labour 229.

The Conservatives are braced for potential losses in south-west London to the LibDems, while Corbyn was campaigning in Croydon yesterday where housing minister Gavin Barwell holds Croydon Central by just 165.

Every time there is a comparison drawn between British Prime Minister Theresa May and a former woman premier "Iron lady" Margaret Thatcher it ends up in the argument that the former is an unelected incumbent while Thatcher had been through the rough and tumble of elections and competitive politics.

"If they truly trusted the British people - and wanted to give them a real say over the future direction of this country - then they would have committed to a democratic vote on any final deal", she said.

As the PM hinted she may be ready to drop the pledge, Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates urged her to stick to the target, which was put into law with the backing of the Tory-Liberal Democrat coalition in 2015.

"They want to unite together to divide our country and we will not let them do it".

Peers would also be forced to back the priorities under the Salisbury Convention, which means that the Lords will not try and vote down government plans mentioned in an election manifesto.

SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson called on the Prime Minister to condemn newspaper headlines suggesting the election was an opportunity to "crush the saboteurs" of Brexit.

A failure to do so would give Mrs May, who has said "no deal is better than a bad deal", a "free hand" to pursue a "Brexit at any cost", with no option for the United Kingdom to change its mind about leaving the European Union if the exit terms are unpalatable.
