Britain witnesses hectic 1st day of election campaigning

Asked why she was refusing to take part in TV debates with other party leaders during the election campaign, Mrs May said: "I've been doing head-to-head debates with Jeremy Corbyn week in and week out since I became Prime Minister".

Former Premier Tony Blair today predicted defeat for Jeremy Corbyn but called for a cross-party movement to tie Theresa May's hands during Brexit negotiations.

Corbyn said he did not want an election about Brexit - an issue that has exacerbated tensions in his deeply divided party - but about what kind of country Britain should be.

According to a YouGov poll for The Times published Thursday, the Conservative party lead with 49 percent, up 4 percentage points from last week.

Asked how he would overcome the poor poll ratings, Corbyn pointed to how he overcame the odds to be elected Labour leader in the first place: "All I can say is, in 2015, nearly exactly two years ago, I was given 200/1 as an outside chance".

An early vote will also delay Brexit talks.

He said: "We are out on the road, taking our message to the whole of the country, taking a message that seven years of this Tory Government and the Coalition (has) brought us greater inequality, greater poverty, greater insecurity, greater misery, greater levels of fear".

"School leaders and teachers have said that Tory cuts to school budgets will mean class sizes will be forced to grow even larger".

Trump, alongside Italian PM, says no USA role in Libya
Trump also sharply denounced the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and promised to address it further in the "not-too-distant future". Trump has complained that the United States contributes more to the military alliance than it receives.

Answering questions following the speech, which won a standing ovation from the audience of loyalists, Corbyn said the election was a chance for Labour to explain its plans.

Theresa May: we have the troops for this fight and they are raring to go.

Eligible voters must make sure they are registered before 22 May in order to have their say.

The next major step is the dissolution of parliament, which must take place on the 25th working day before any vote, which in this instance is 3 May.

Under the 2010 Fixed-term Parliaments Act, May needs a two-thirds majority in the House of Commons in order to hold a snap election.

May, who also backed staying in the European Union but has since embraced the notion of life outside the bloc, is pitching her campaign on a promise of stable leadership to deliver a good deal for Britain from exit negotiations with Brussels.

Mrs May, addressing voters just three hours after MPs voted to clear the way for the 8 June poll, said: "Only you can give us the mandate, so vote for a strong and stable leadership in this country". The majority of those people who voted for Brexit live in Labour's heartlands.
