Trump promises to find solution for Wisconsin and New York dairy farmers

"Canada is not to blame for the global situation that both Canadian and American dairy farmers face", David MacNaughton said in a letter to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. "The facts do not bear this out", the letter began.

Trump levelled the threat during an event at a Wisconsin factory where he unveiled his "Buy American-Hire American" executive order.

Dumontier says it's ironic Trump is calling Canada protectionist when it comes to dairy, noting the US system of subsidizing farmers has created a market that's even more protectionist.

But in recent years, USA dairy producers found they could sell a new product, diafiltered milk, a kind of milk-ingredient paste, to Canadian cheese and yogurt processors, because it wasn't covered by tariffs allowed under NAFTA.

"Because the American system is a free market system, the dairy farm that was producing that product doesn't need that milk anymore", Mullin said.

In January, U.S. dairy and agricultural associations wrote to Trump asking him to take action against Canada's dairy practices, saying they were "resulting in lost revenues and jobs for dairy farmers and processors across the United States".

U.S. President Donald Trump's protectionist speech in Wisconsin included a harsh and direct attack on trade with Canada. House Speaker Paul Ryan was unable to attend because he's leading a congressional delegation on an overseas trip this week. "So we'll start those discussions".

Earlier in the month, Grassland Dairy Products announced it's reducing intake from local producers.

Canadian dairy farmers welcomed the ambassador's intervention. The move comes as 75 Wisconsin dairy farms won't have buyers for their milk beginning May 1st because of the restrictions.

Statement: US national security adviser arrives s Kabul
However, the figures released in April 2017 of security-related aid that the Trump administration has requested from the U.S. Congress for Pakistan indicate the U.S. government has not decreased its allocations for the upcoming year.

Steel is expected to play a key role in any joint infrastructure projects between Canada and the US, something Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged to co-operate on during their White House meeting in February.

Francois Dumontier, a spokesman for Les Producteurs de lait du Quebec, said imports of US milk products have increased since 1993 and now account for three-quarters of milk products in Canada.

MacNaughton backed the organization's position that Canada has done nothing to block US imports, and that the predicament is the result of an "over-saturated" market that has led to lower prices. The "non-fat milk solid" isn't even considered milk for purposes of trade law, but an "ingredient" for use in processed foods like pizza cheese.

The ambassador told reporters in Halifax on Wednesday that earlier written appeals from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker to the White House demanding action on the dairy file contained "factual errors" and noted the goal of his strongly-worded response was to "set the record straight".

Canada's dairy sector is protected by high tariffs on imported products and controls on domestic production as a means of supporting prices that farmers receive.

"We have not contributed or created problems for them".

The specific program in question is the National Ingredients Strategy, a type of pricing program that gives incentives for Canadian dairy processors that steer away from purchasing dairy products produced in the United States.

"This has been an issue for a very long time, Trump or no Trump", she said.
