Trump Considering Sanctions Against Russia, Iran for Supporting Syria

Rouhani Putin

U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley now says ousting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is a priority for the U.S.

"It could be that Russian Federation is knowingly allowing chemical weapons to remain in Syria".

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday", White House national security adviser H.R. McMaster said the United States was "prepared to do more" regarding military action in Syria if necessary.

Instead, Tillerson emphasized the administration's priority in defeating Islamic State forces in Syria and said little about the U.S.'s preference on Assad's future.

"It's time for (Russian President) Vladimir Putin to face the truth about the tyrant he is propping up", Johnson said, according to a foreign ministry spokeswoman. "The president will make whatever decision he thinks is in the best interests of the American people".

She said: "We do not see a peaceful Syria with Mr Assad in there".

The United States launched missile strikes on Syrian government targets in response to the alleged use of chemical weapons, the first such intervention by America. President Trump had spoken out during his election campaign against USA military intervention, and had been keen to fix relations with Russian Federation, whose president Vladimir Putin backs the Assad regime.

I ruined Trump's 'unbelievably successful couple of weeks' - Sean Spicer
Perino was certainly sympathetic to Spicer and she told him, "I do think you're a little harder on yourself than you need to be". There is continuing outrage over the White House press secretary's Holocaust remarks.

Also on April 9, Syrian state media reported that Iranian President Hassan Rohani affirmed his support for Syria's government in a phone call with Assad.

Earlier on Sunday, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said on ABC News' "This Week" that Russian Federation is "complicit" in the chemical attack in Syria.

"The failure related to the recent strike and the recent awful chemical weapons attack in large measure is a failure on Russia's part to achieve its commitment to the global community", Tillerson said in an interview aired on ABC on Sunday.

The suspected chemical attack on Khan Sheikhoun on Wednesday left 89 people dead. "I think we ought to ask them that question".

A statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Sunday noted that during Johnson's trip, talks had been scheduled on an "entire spectrum of global problems" and also over Moscow-London ties.

The Russian government has denied that Syria carried out a chemical attack, saying that civilians on the ground were poisoned after Syrian planes struck a depot producing chemical weapons for rebels.

Former First Minister Alex Salmond claimed the move made Mr Johnson look like "some sort of mini-me" who can not be trusted to hold his own talks with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.
