Trump Awaits Outcome of Special Congressional Election

"MoveOn members are fired up - and if Ossoff doesn't top 50 percent tonight, we're ready to help him finish this race with a victory in June".

"Hey that's what happens when you have $9 million, most of it from out of Georgia", said Handel, asked about the moment.

Price won the district in November with over 60 percent of the vote, but Trump beat his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, by barely a percentage point in the district.

Outside groups poured millions into the nationally-watched contest, which was widely viewed as an early indicator of Trump's popularity as he closed out his first 100 days in office.

With all precincts reporting, Democrat Jon Ossoff led the crowded field of 18 candidates with 48 percent of the vote.

Ossoff hopes to win an outright majority in Tuesday's vote, a "jungle primary" with all 18 candidates from both parties on the same ballot.

"They were ringing my phone off the hook", said Kim Fambro, 45, who said the outreach convinced her to vote for Ossoff. Georgia's 6th district was seen as the best chance for that spark.

N. Korea gears up to celebrate birthday of country's founder
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have risen amid concerns over the United States' possible pre-emptive strike against North Korea. The country launched a long-range rocket and conducted the two nuclear tests previous year , including its most powerful to date.

Ossoff said on CNN that Trump was misinformed about his positions and that he was focused on issues affecting the region, not Washington. The seat Ossoff nearly won was represented by conservative firebrand Newt Gingrich for decades and more recently by tea party congressman Tom Price, now the health and human services secretary. For his part, Mr. Trump recorded a robocall encouraging voters to support the Republican candidates, and tweeted about the race several times. And that's a big contrast to the Democrat who doesn't even live in the district. So add the Georgia 6 Round 1 results to our ever-growing pile of reasons to take early vote results with a salt mine's worth of salt.

"Say NO", Trump tweeted. The party avoided embarrassment last week when it narrowly held a conservative Kansas seat vacated when Trump tapped Republican Representative Mike Pompeo to head the Central Intelligence Agency.

The Georgia congressional seat is attracting so much attention also because it has been the Republicans' since the late 1970s - and a candidate as strong as Ossoff is definitely a threat to them.

As for Handel, she has already started focusing on the runoff.

But Trump's sharp-elbowed cultural worldview and provocative rhetoric helped Hillary Clinton make serious inroads in a place populated by wealthy, well-educated white voters, many of whom defected en masse from the GOP leader's ticket a year ago.

But at some point, Democrats are going to have to prove they can convert the anti-Trump resistance into wins, like Republicans did with Scott Brown's victory in 2010 in MA and Democrats did with 2007 special elections in MS and Louisiana.
