Trump and Xi Jinping meet to discuss 'war today' with North Korea

Contrasting leadership of China and the United States

US President Donald Trump and his visiting Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping agreed to work with the worldwide community to achieve a peaceful solution to the North Korea nuclear threat, according to a White House statement.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his USA counterpart, Donald Trump, pledged on Friday to expand mutually beneficial cooperation and to manage their differences based on mutual respect.

The sudden flurry of action centering on North Korea comes on the heels of Trump's summit in Florida on Friday with Chinese President Xi Jinping. More investment by Chinese companies in the U.S. creating jobs for the American could reverse Trump's negative impression of China's trade with the United States.

Xinhua, China's official news agency, said Xi had invited Trump to make a state visit to China in 2017 and that the U.S. president had "accepted the invitation with pleasure, and hoped to make the trip at an early date".

The leaders of the world's two most powerful economies agreed to a 100-day plan to discuss trade talks directed at boosting U.S. exports and reducing Washington's trade deficit with China, according to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

He said that his intention for the summit was to raise concerns about China's trade practices, and to urge Xi to do more to control North Korea's missile and nuclear programs. The most powerful message for the Chinese leader may have been Trump's decision to launch US missile strikes at Syria. That could indicate that the relationship between the two countries remains stable, despite Trump's fiery accusations during his campaign, and afterward, that China has stolen USA manufacturing jobs.

Donald Trump is taking his 15th golf trip in the 11 weeks since becoming President, as he spends another weekend at one of his own luxury resorts.

"President Trump indicated to President Xi that he welcomed any ideas that President Xi and China might have as to other actions we could take and that we would be happy to work with them", Tillerson said.

In response, Xi said the two sides "arrived at many common understandings", including the need to deepen friendship.

"The two sides noted the urgency of the threat of North Korea's weapons programmes, reaffirmed their commitment to a denuclearised Korean peninsula and committed to fully implement UN Security Council resolutions", Spicer said.

Xi had arrived at the meeting with a gift of "tweetable deliverables", sources said - peace offerings on Trump's signature issues of trade and jobs that were meant to smooth ties.

Russia Relations At All-Time Low
But that one would have condemned the USA missile strikes ordered by President Donald Trump in response to the chemical attack. Orrin Hatch, also of Utah, said he had "strong reservations" about authorizing the use of force in Syria.

Beijing's first notable success was when Mr. Trump promised Mr. Xi over the phone that he would abide by the "one China" policy after all. Xi invited Trump to visit China later this year.

However, here again, the United States must accept some of the blame.

- Xi "showed understanding" for the USA attack on Syria.

According to South China Morning Post, Arabella sang a traditional song and recited poems in Mandarin for the Chinese president and his wife.

Last year Mr Trump said China had "raped the US" and vowed to brand the superpower a currency manipulator. "I think truly progress has been made".

On military relations, which he said make up an important part of bilateral ties, Xi pointed out that mutual trust in military and security areas forms the basis of the strategic mutual trust between the two countries. But the U.S. president later agreed to respect the "One China" policy in a telephone call with President Xi in February.

Trump accepted Xi's invitation to visit China this year, and Washington will coordinate with Beijing about the timing of the visit, according to Tillerson. And within Trump's administration, there are still divisions over how to approach China.

"This man who is now in office in America claimed that he wanted to fight terrorism but today all terrorists in Syria are celebrating the U.S. attack", Rouhani said in a speech aired by state television.

The U.S. and other foreign governments have long overestimated China's ability to affect Pyongyang's behavior, said Ruan Zongze, a U.S. relations expert at the China Institute of International Studies, a think tank run by the foreign ministry.

Kim's government has conducted five underground nuclear tests, two of them in 2016, and is working to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles that ultimately could deliver a warhead to USA territory.
