Trump administration says Iran complying with nuclear deal
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday sent a letter to Speaker of the House of Representatives Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis. certifying the compliance with the 2015 deal, which exchanges sanctions relief for a rollback of Iran's nuclear program.
The April 19 order comes a day after the U.S. State Department notified Congress that Iran was complying with the terms of the accord reached in 2015 between Tehran and six world powers.
"Iran remains a leading state sponsor of terror through many platforms and methods", he said, in a regular letter to Congress.
In exchange, global and USA sanctions on nuclear-related issues were lifted and billions of dollars in Iranian assets were unfrozen when the deal was implemented in January 2016.
USA lawmakers who once loudly insisted that Iran was cheating on the nuclear deal stayed quiet April 19 after the Donald Trump administration declared otherwise.
Additional sanctions wouldn't necessarily violate the terms of the Iran deal, but it is possible that they could push Iran to drop out of the agreement and begin to develop nuclear weapons.
During his presidential campaign, Trump called the agreement "the worst deal ever negotiated".
The then-candidate declined to give details about his plans to improve the deal, and Trump has not clarified how he would approach a new agreement since becoming President.
In addition to the US, five other countries and the European Union agreed to lift sanctions against Iran in exchange for it's assurance it won't try to make or acquire a nuclear weapon.
"Secretary of State Rex Tillerson took a position on Iran and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that amounts to an extreme departure from that of our traditional allies, other world powers, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)".
Instead, the Trump administration would conduct a "comprehensive review" of U.S. policy toward Iran, Tillerson said, leaving one of Barack Obama's signature policies in place - for now. He said this review must address all the threats posed by Iran, adding, "It's clear there are many".
Kiyaei warns that a shift away from the JCPOA would not be in the best interests of the United States, "nor will it help empower those within the Iranian administration that seek to bring the level of tensions between the two countries down".
"There have been cases in which a review has resulted in withdrawing from an agreement, so it is certainly possible in this [JCPOA] case", he said.
Iran's continued support for terror since the implementation of the nuclear deal has been a major concern for the Trump administration, the Free BeaconreportedWednesday. It is the first update under the Trump administration. He had said in January of 2016 after the deal was implemented that "Iran will not get its hands on a nuclear bomb". He says that will be determined by an ongoing review.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, known more commonly as "the Iran deal", was the result of negotiations between former President Barack Obama, members of the United Nation's Security Council, Germany, and the EU. That includes Iran's support for Houthi rebels in Yemen, its backing for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and for Islamic militant groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon.
