After being replaced by Tony Romo as CBS' lead National Football League analyst, longtime broadcaster Phil Simms is heading to pregame.
Simms already has studio experience, working on Showtime's "Inside the NFL" with host James Brown, who also pilots "The NFL Today" on CBS. There, Simms will be filling the chair vacated by Tony Gonzalez (who's moving to LA and may take a role with Fox).
CBS Sports announcers Jim Nantz (L) and Phil Simms speak with the media at a CBS Super Bowl XLVII Broadcasters Press Conference at the New Orleans Convention Center on January 29, 2013 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Absolutely. Of course it was. For years, I think ever since I started on "Inside the NFL" after a couple of years Sean had mentioned to me would I ever think about coming into the studio.
In an interview with New York Newsday, Simms said, "When I first was told that I wasn't going to do the games, was I upset? When we'd be in the booth and getting ready to come on the air, you're like wow, it's all worth it, because it's so exciting to be at the games and have a chance to talk [about] 'em and just be involved and be around all the players and coaches". "I already know 'J.B.' [James Brown] and Boomer [Esiason] from doing 'Inside the National Football League.' I am looking forward to the next phase of my broadcast career".
Romo, 37, was announced as Nantz's new partner after being released by the Dallas Cowboys on April 4. Just a year ago, CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus had high praise for both Simms and Jim Nantz. Instead, it's clear that Simms still wanted the top analyst role, was bumped out against his wishes, and settled for studio work only later when it became clear it was the best remaining option for him. "We had a number of discussions about it and I was excited about it, and he was excited".
"Listen, I didn't make any comments for a lot of reasons and you want to sit there and think about it", Simms said. "I was kept in the loop the whole time, no question". I think Phil is.
With Tony Romo taking over for Phil Simms in the booth next season, the network needed a new role for the long-time analyst. "I am looking forward to the next phase of my broadcast career".
