Iran nuclear deal a failure, says US

The nuclear deal forged by the Obama administration and allies "completely ignored all of the other serious threats that Iran poses", Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said from the department's ornate Treaty Room.

The White House is conducting a top-to-bottom review of Iran policy, including an evaluation of the deal officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson issued a threat of military confrontation with Iran Wednesday at a hastily called news conference in which he drew a direct parallel to Washington's reckless and increasingly risky confrontation with North Korea.

His tough words matched those of US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis, who said in a visit to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday that Iran's destabilising influence would have to be overcome to end the conflict in Yemen.

President Donald Trump ordered the review to evaluate whether suspension of sanctions related to the nuclear deal was "vital to the national security interests of the United States", Tillerson said.

As President Trump wages a rhetorical battle with North Korea over its nuclear program, his secretary of state says the nuclear deal with Iran will now be placed under review.

The Trump administration, however, has "no intention of passing the buck to a future administration". During last year's presidential campaign, he called for dismantling or renegotiating it. Republicans in Congress also have been critical, advocating new sanctions on Iran for supporting terrorism and for its ballistic missile program.

It was an attempt to clarify a State Department certification, issued shortly before a midnight deadline on Tuesday, that said Iran was complying with the nuclear agreement that also eased crippling worldwide sanctions against the Islamic republic's economy.

Jose Mourinho urges Anthony Martial to start delivering for Manchester United
United face Anderlecht in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final Thursday, with the aggregate scores poised at 1-1. Jose Mourinho has not been afraid to criticise his Manchester United players in his first season at Old Trafford .

In addition to the US, five other countries and the European Union agreed to lift sanctions against Iran in exchange for it's assurance it won't try to make or acquire a nuclear weapon.

The deal has allowed many Western companies to resume business with Iran, including Boeing, which has signed two major agreements to deliver dozens of planes to Iran.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani gives a press conference in Tehran on Jaunary 17, 2017, to mark the first anniversary of the implementation of the nuclear deal. "It's not clear we've achieved that result, and the economic relief they've received has been used on weapons systems and support for terrorism".

He also levelled a series of accusations at Iran - intensifying multiple conflicts including the one in Syria, undermining United States interests in several countries, continuing to support attacks against Israel, and sponsoring cyber and terror attacks across the world.

The deal represents the same "failed approach of the past" that brought us to the threat of North Korea, he noted.

Sanctions were lifted after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) certified it had restricted its sensitive nuclear activities.

"Today Secretary Tillerson and the Trump administration placed the security of the American people and the world at grave risk". "So right now what we're seeing is the nations in the region...trying to checkmate Iran and the amount of disruption and instability they can cause".
