Ice to Meet You: Newfoundland Sees First 'Berg of Season

Iceberg Newfoundland

The big iceberg is one of many that have passed by off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador this year.

Canada's CBC News said that over the Easter weekend, the Southern Shore highway near the town was blocked with traffic as photographers pulled up to snap pictures. "It's a huge iceberg and it's in so close that people can get a good photograph of it".

The first iceberg of the season passes the South Shore on April 16. Passersby have begun to crowd Newfoundland's coastal streets for a photo opp with the large iceberg, as the potential exists for more glacier pieces to appear in the coming weeks and months. The rise in the movement of the bergs has been attributed to uncommonly strong counter-clockwise winds that are reportedly drawing the icebergs south. Experts believe that global warming, which is accelerating the Greenland ice sheet's shedding of ice, is also impacting iceberg movements.

According to the BBC, the icebergs often float by Newfoundland during the spring and summer months because they break off of larger pieces of sea ice further north in the arctic region.

During the chaos Ms Fraser was separated from her sister when the substance was thrown from "a bottle of some sort". The sisters said they had heard others may have lost their eyesight in the attack.

The iceberg was reportedly 46 meters high, and Kavanagh said it had been stranded in shallow waters off the Avalon Peninsula.

The BBC reported more icebergs are drifting through iceberg alley than is normal for this point in the year, with hundreds of icebergs in the Atlantic.

It's already been a particularly busy iceberg season.

As a result, the iceberg - and any others that may join it - could drive tourism and related economic activity to the coastal town of Ferryland. The Canadian Press reports that 616 have already moved into the North Atlantic shipping lanes compared to 687 by the late-September season's end past year. Last year, 687 icebergs were spotted from the start of the year to September, according to CTV.
