Giant Asteroid Zooms Relatively Close To Earth

This large asteroid with an estimated size of 2000 feet will fly past Earth on Wednesday.

That notwithstanding, it means that the earth is still safe, as 4.6 lunar distances translates to about 1.7 million kilometers from earth.

The Rock's close approach is an "alarming reminder" of how potentially devastating chunks of space debris can get within scary distances of Earth, robotic telescope service Slooh said.

After Wednesday's flyby, stargazers may be able to see the asteroid with a small telescope for the next 1-2 nights.

The report said that NASA believes the asteroid is not in danger of colliding with the planet, but it is "a very close approach for an asteroid of this size", which is why it's an uncomfortable situation.

An asteroid a mile wide hitting the Earth would unleash as much energy as around 1,000 atom bombs like the one dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.

In 2027, the half-mile wide asteroid is predicted to pass closer to the Earth than the Moon, coming within 236,000 miles of Earth.

Kevin Durant won't play for Warriors in Game 2 of playoffs
He returned for the final three games of the regular season and recorded a pair of double-doubles alongside a 29-point outing. Kerr hopes to have a healthy lineup for Game 3, though might choose to hold out Durant again given the series lead.

Experts estimate the rock will pass Earth safely and it will not make another pass so close for another 480 years. NASA says, calling it an "outstanding opportunity to study this asteroid".

The Arecibo observatory in Puerto Rico - which has one of the world's biggest radio telescopes - captured the 2014 JO25's first images, showing an object that is likely "two large asteroids that fused together".

It will be another decade before an asteroid of JO25's size passes by Earth.

This is the closest 2014 JO25 has come to Earth for about 400 years and will be its closest approach for at least the next 500 years.

The asteroid, discovered in May 2014 by astronomers in Arizona, is officially known as "2014 JO25".

Earth hasn't been greeted by this asteroid for centuries, according to NASA.

Object 2014 JO25, dubbed The Rock after wrestler Dwayne Johnson, is said to be 'among the strongest asteroid radar targets of the year, ' and will pass by our planet within just 4.6 lunar distances tomorrow.
