Ann Coulter vows to speak at Berkeley despite cancellation

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter's scheduled April 27th appearance at the University of California - Berkeley was cancelled by the school Wednesday due to apparent security concerns.

We understand that earlier this evening our Dean of Students, Joseph Greenwell, informed your leadership that despite extensive efforts on the part of UCPD and the staff within Student Affairs, we have been unable to find a safe and suitable venue for your planned April 27 event featuring Ann Coulter.

In its letter, the university said the students and officials could work together to reschedule the event for a later date.

The school is anxious about violent protests: Berkeley made national news in February and again on Saturday when far-right and far-left demonstrators clashed in physical confrontations that led to several arrests.

Coulter reportedly also asked Berkeley officials to warn students that "engaging in violence, mayhem or heckling" to prevent the speech would result in expulsion, the statement said. The commentator is known for her own no-holds-barred and openly hostile rhetoric, which includes calling critics "retarded", proposing the U.S.

"This is as clear-cut a case as it gets that public universities are using taxpayer dollars to shut down conservative speech, while allowing liberal speech only", they wrote.

Exxon seeks OK to resume Russian oil venture
Exxon purportedly asked the Treasury Department in recent months if it could drill alongside Rosneft in the Black Sea. The newspaper said Exxon has been seeking permission to work with Rosneft in areas banned by US sanctions.

Later, during an appearance on Fox News' Tucker Carlson Tonight, she promised to give the speech despite the university's cancellation.

Last week, an appearance by conservative writer David Horowitz was also canceled after university police told the campus Republican group that to ensure adequate security, the event would have to be held in the middle of the day and outside the center of campus.

Both events were planned by Berkeley's College Republicans. "I'm an American. I have constitutional rights". The groups putting on the event are not sharing where Coulter will speak, but said they are looking at several locations, including on campus.

In February, an appearance at Cal by former Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos was canceled after protesters rioted outside the scheduled event. Activists on both the left and the right have used the city, and the school, as a symbol for First Amendment rights - and their limitations - in the new political climate. In this context, we greatly appreciate recent public comments by your spokespeople, who have offered full support for increased security measures in and around high-profile events.

"We learned about the invitation to Ms. Coulter by reading about it in the newspaper", university officials said. Students organized an outdoor concert in protest with the hashtag #AuburnUnites. It noted that "most Mondays and Tuesdays in September during the day should work".
