US, Japan agree China should play larger role on North Korea

Japan, US agree on collaborative approach to Korean Peninsula issue, launch new economic dialogue

Pence's warning to North Korea comes just days after ex-officials under former President Obama admitted that Obama's wimpiness against foreign adversaries "left a more risky world".

On Monday, in South Korea, he said that the United States policy of "strategic patience" with North Korea was over and reiterated U.S. support for South Korea.

The UK has urged North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to stop "these belligerent acts and comply with United Nations resolutions", but No 10 refused to be drawn on reports that Prime Minister Theresa May has privately urged Mr Trump not to launch air strikes on North Korea.

Susan Thornton, acting U.S. assistant secretary of state for East Asia, said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and China's top diplomat, State Councillor Yang Jiechi, agreed in a phone call on Sunday on the need for strict enforcement of United Nations resolutions and for global action to press Pyongyang "to cease provocative actions and recommit to peaceful denuclearisation". "Everybody has been outplayed, they've all been outplayed by this gentleman, and we'll see what happens".

Meanwhile, Twitter gave VP Mike Pence kudos for his stern demeanor in North Korea.

"It's a little bit early to say just what forms things will take, but we are certainly eager to increase our trade relationships with Japan, and to do so in the form of an agreement", Ross said when asked about a possible free trade pact. "We are with you 100 per cent".

US Vice President Mike Pence reassured Japan of American commitment to reining in North Korea's nuclear and missile ambitions on Tuesday, after warning that US strikes in Syria and Afghanistan showed the strength of its resolve.

One called for "dual-track" talks on denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula - the top priority of the United States - and replacing the armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War with a formal peace treaty, a key demand of Pyongyang.

"If the U.S. is reckless enough to use military means it would mean from that very day, an all-out war", he said.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made a new appeal Tuesday for calm on the Korean Peninsula.

Wang told reporters that although US officials have made clear that a military strike remains a possibility, he believes that Washington would still prefer to de-escalate tensions through multi-sided talks.

He added that Japan needed to apply pressure on Pyongyang to "seriously respond to a dialogue" with the worldwide community.

It's necessary to put pressure on North Korea so that it will accept dialogue in good faith.

He is expected to discuss Korean tensions with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, as well as hold economic talks with Finance Minister Taro Aso.

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters he hopes "there will be no unilateral actions like those we saw recently in Syria and that the USA will follow the line that President Trump repeatedly voiced during the election campaign".

Instead, Japan prefers multilateral deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership, but this was nixed by US President Donald Trump, who called it a "job-killer".

It said the dialogue would focus on three areas: trade and investment rules and issues, cooperation in macroeconomic policy and specific industry sectors. Yet at the urging of South Korea and for fear of angering China, the United States failed to use its full diplomatic and financial power to enforce those sanctions.

He said Trump is certain that negotiating trade deals with individual countries was the best way to ensure they yield "win-win" situations for both sides.

Pence said the US trade deficit has more than doubled in the five years since the U.S.
