United States vows to keep up pressure on Syria after missile strikes

Donald Trump and Xi Jinping 'made tremendous progress' at summit

US missile strikes on a Syrian airbase came as President Donald Trump and China leader Xi JInping, meeting for the first time, were discussing what should be done about North Korea's development of weapons of mass destruction.

Following the summit, President Xi agreed to work on a 100-day plan for trade talks aimed at boosting USA exports and reducing China's trade surplus with the United States.

"We have made tremendous progress in our relationship with China".

Xi and Trump agreed to a 100-day plan for trade talks to increase United States exports to China and to reduce the U.S. trade deficit.

Similarly, though US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters after the summit that Trump and Xi had held productive and "very comprehensive" discussions on the North Korean issue, the overall prognosis for greater US-China cooperation on the issue remains grim. The U.S. president also accepted an invitation from President Xi to visit China later this year.

The two leaders agreed that their first meeting, held at the seaside Mar-a-Lago resort in the US state of Florida, was "positive and fruitful".

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) - The U.S. airstrikes this week were aimed at a Syrian air base, but nearly certainly got the attention of another adversary - North Korea.

Both the USA and China differ on their approach to resolve the internal strife in Syria.

Xi was expected to seek assurances that Trump will not interfere in the territorial dispute over the South China Sea or question the "One China" policy by reaching out to Taiwan's leader again, as Trump did during the transition.

"I think a first step could be getting North Korea to freeze all of its activities - no more nuclear testing, no more missile testing, get inspectors in to verify things", Blinken said.

"The relationship developed by President Xi and myself, I think, is outstanding, " Trump said Friday during a meeting between the two countries' delegations.

But while Gibb seemed to pass unnoticed during the run, race director Jock Semple was infuriated and went after Switzer midrace. The Boston Marathon finally began admitting women in 1972, and Switzer's run is widely credited with forcing the change.

The US leader appeared confident when Xi arrived at the Florida venue, even hazarding a joke about his own reputation as a dealmaker.

Their comments were echoed by a front-page commentary in the overseas edition of the ruling Communist Party's official People's Daily, which said the meeting established the tone for the development of US-China relations.

Trump informed Xi of the strike as they finished eating dinner together on Friday, just as the US-launched cruise missiles struck their targets.

The White House said Trump also stressed to Xi the importance of creating "reciprocal market access" that did not disadvantage American workers.

Trump told Xi that he welcomes any ideas China has on the issue and the US would be happy to work with Beijing.

In the wake of this Trump storm, Syria served as a diversion for Beijing from making any concrete commitments on some of the contentious issues during the summit.

Another result of the diplomatic wrangling: a surprising Chinese abstention on a United Nations resolution condemning a Syrian chemical weapons attack.

The highly anticipated U.S. The former reality TV star has spent years bashing China and described the country as an enemy of the United States in his campaign manifesto.

The U.S. Navy's Third Fleet, in turn, publicly announced that the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier Carl Vinson and a strike force that includes two missile destroyers and a guided-missile cruiser were being diverted north from scheduled port calls in Australia to "maintain readiness and presence in the western Pacific".

The Trump administration, however, had other plans.

China is making all-out efforts in fighting corruption, said Xi, who urged the USA side to coordinate more closely with China in hunting for fugitives who have fled overseas and recovering illicit money.
