Trump, GOP face referendum in Georgia; Dems aim for upset

Anita Rich wasn't thrilled about voting for Donald Trump last year and she hopes her Representative will use their experience to guide the president

Follow live as Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff looks to turn a House seat blue and avoid a runoff in the Georgia House special election.

Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff for Georgia's 6th Congressional District special election speaks during an election eve rally at Andretti Indoor Karting and Games in Roswell, Georgia, April 17, 2017. And we're going to see if that organic enthusiasm which is on the Democratic side right now - it was on the Republican side in 2016 - we'll see if that can carry the day in a district that Democrats really shouldn't win.

Hollywood celebrities have turned their attention to Georgia, where a 30-year-old documentary film producer running as a Democrat is attempting to wrestle away a historically Republican district.

The president also warned in an email sent to supporters on Tuesday morning that the seat was in danger of falling "into the hands of an extreme liberal" in an email sent to supporters on Tuesday morning. So if you're living in any of the counties represented in Georgia's 6th Congressional District, get out and vote Tuesday.

Ossoff raised a stunning $8.3 million in the first three months of 2017, forcing Republicans to spend heavily against him.

Ossoff - hoping to reach the necessary 50 percent threshold to earn the 6th Congressional District seat vacated by the new Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price, R-Ga. - talked around the touchy residency issue during a moment of truth on CNN's "New Day." Tom Price won the seat handily, by more than 23 percentage points. He and other colleagues predicted that these victories signaled the war in Iraq was taking its toll on the Republican Party and that the Democrats would be able to gain ground in the November election.

The possibility of making it to a runoff has led 18 candidates - 13 Republicans and five Democrats - to enter the race. Expect pants-wetting jubilation in the media tomorrow like you haven't seen in ages if Ossoff pulls it off, plus a million and one hot takes that a big blue wave is on the way next fall. If not, the leader would face the second-place finisher in a runoff.

Leading Republican candidates in the race include former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel, business executive Bob Gray, and former State Sen. In one advertisement, produced by the conservative super PAC Congressional Leadership Fund, Ossoff's national security bona fides are called inconsequential - some of his work experience took place when he was still an undergraduate at Georgetown - and he is shown singing with his college a capella group and dressed as "Star Wars" character Han Solo while discussing beer kegs.

The Martin Family Circus, a six-person family band from Nashville, is set to perform at the event, according to Politico . All eyes have been on the Trump administration for the Easter event, which draws huge crowds.

"Well, I grew up in this district", Ossoff said again.

"Republican voters are not going to sit by and let this district go to a Democrat", Handel said at one of her final campaign stops.

Ossoff made President Trump the focus of a few of his campaign ads and has used the slogan "Make Trump furious" for online fundraising.

Trump tweeted on Tuesday afternoon, just hours before polls close.

"I grew up in this district".

Polls put Ossoff in the lead but short of that margin.

Handel is among the Republican candidates trying to maintain some distance from Trump, rarely discussing him unless asked.

LIASSON: I interpret that as the White House being anxious about this race, that it's possible that Ossoff can get over 50 percent tonight.
