Senate confirms Trump pick Neil Gorsuch to Supreme Court

Only three Democrats: Sens. Joe Manchin, Heidi Heitkamp and Joe Donnelly, sided with the GOP majority.

Vice President Mike Pence presided over the vote, but was not needed to break a tie. It was also retribution for McConnell's refusal to give Merrick Garland-who President Barack Obama nominated to the seat-a hearing. A handful of Democrats joined Republicans in voting "yes" on Gorsuch - West Virginia Sen.

"Today's confirmation is the culmination of a 14-month power grab orchestrated by Mitch McConnell and his right-wing allies, and enabled by every member of the GOP caucus".

At 49, he is decades younger than several of the other justices - two are in their 80s and one is 78 - raising the possibility that President Donald Trump will have a chance to appoint more conservatives to a court that has been somewhat balanced in recent years.

"I believe it will make this body a more partisan place", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

Democrats accused Gorsuch of being so conservative as to be outside the judicial mainstream, favoring corporate interests over ordinary Americans in legal opinions, and displaying insufficient independence from Trump. "If he is instead a justice for the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation, that will spell trouble for America".

Senate Republicans resorted to extraordinary steps to overcome Democratic opposition to Gorsuch, including changing long-standing Senate rules to prohibit the use of a procedural blockade called a filibuster for Supreme Court nominees. Individuals on both the right and left have praised Judge Gorsuch, and it was made clear during his confirmation hearings that he would be a superb jurist who respects the rule of law and immensely values and understands that the judiciary must be independent.

General election 2017: Corbyn welcomes May's announcement
But the move was supported by the Romford Labour party and the Conservative's Romford MP Andrew Rosindell who praised Mrs May. He said: "A year or so ago when she became Prime Minister, the situation was different as we did not know what would happen".

But despite the opposition to Gorsuch, his confirmation was never seriously in doubt and he flew remarkably under the radar.

"In fact, under a certain scenario, there could even be more than that", Trump said.

The Supreme Court has been operating with only eight justices since February 2016. Gorsuch wrote separately holding that the mandate infringed upon the owners' religious beliefs "requiring them to lend what their religion teaches to be an impermissible degree of assistance to the commission of what their religion teaches to be a moral wrong".

"Over the coming years, Republicans will be responsible for every one of the disastrous decisions that Neil Gorsuch will enable".

The Senate's approval of Gorsuch reinstates the nine-seat court's 5-4 conservative majority, fulfilling an important Trump campaign promise. We now have a new Justice who is so conservative that he makes Antonin Scalia look moderate'. To remind us that legislators may appeal to their own moral convictions and to claims about social utility to reshape the law as they think it should be in the future, " he said.

'Neil Gorsuch's confirmation to the Supreme Court represents the triumph of bullying over moderation, ' said Russell Roybal, deputy executive director of the National LGBTQ Task Force.

McConnell's detractors recall that in 1988 McConnell voted to confirm Justice Anthony Kennedy during the final year of Ronald Reagan's presidency.
