Scottish leader: May looking to move UK to right

(CNN)British Prime Minister Theresa May has cast off her "Theresa Maybe" label, confounding critics who said she is overly cautious and risk averse, by calling for a general election to be held on June 8.

The vote is set to take place on June 8 with MPs due to vote tomorrow in the House of Commons on whether to back Theresa May's call.

The dramatic move comes against the backdrop of the country's decision to leave the European Union in the last year's referendum. "Labour will stand up for the people of Britain".

After Theresa May called for a General Election this morning, United Kingdom voters have taken to social media to express their thoughts and predictions for our future. If the Prime Minister won't attend, empty chair her. Corbyn can defend her position as they seem to vote the same on these matters. The election will be a vote on her performance so far.

"If we don't hold a general election now", May said, "their political game playing will continue and the negotiations with the European Union will reach their most hard stage in the run up to the next general election".

"If we do not hold a General Election now, their political gameplaying will continue. Since the referendum, we have seen consumer confidence remain high, record numbers of jobs, and economic growth that has exceeded all expectations". Despite opposition, May has vowed to carry out Brexit within government deadlines and opinion polls at this stage give her a strong lead, allowing the Conservatives to increase their parliamentary majority.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May arrives to speak to the media outside her official residence of 10 Downing Street in London, Tuesday April 18, 2017.

Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon said that the election would be "about standing up for Scotland, in the face of a right-wing, austerity-obsessed Tory government with no mandate in Scotland".

European Council President Donald Tusk said he had a phone conversation with May after her announcement.

A diplomat from an European Union member state added that May "is completely right to call these elections now" as she could benefit from a favourable political context.

May said she would be bringing a motion to the House on Wednesday, with Opposition parties indicating that they would support the motion.

She said the government had the right plan to negotiate Brexit, and there would be no change of course.
