San Bernardino school looks to recover after killings

A 9-year-old student, who was behind Karen Smith, was wounded in the shooting.

A 9-year-old boy wounded in the shooting Monday at a Southern California elementary school is recovering and expected to survive, officials said.

The children were inadvertently hit as they stood behind Smith, police Chief Jarrod Burguan said at a news conference. "They were just her babies", Fields said.

"Policemen were everywhere and ambulances, firetrucks, helicopters", she said of the scene she saw.

Investigators who searched Anderson's home after the shooting found a note that made reference to the relationship, feeling dishonored and "moving forward with no regrets", Burguan said.

Information was revealed from temporary orders from 1997 and 2013, including claims that Cedric Charles Anderson put a pillow over a former girlfriend's face and threatened his first wife, according to the documents.

San Bernardino was also the site of a terror attack in December 2015 in which a couple shot and killed 14 people at an office holiday party.

But affected children also have "extraordinary gifts", including a passion for music and extremely friendly personalities, an expert said. Smith and Anderson had a short marriage before the shooting, which a San Bernardino Unified School District official said stemmed from a domestic violence dispute.

Jennifer Smith, who became a teacher like her mother, said Karen Smith's impact last long after her students left her classroom.

"Personally, she was my rock, my best friend and my world", Jennifer Smith, Karen Smith's daughter, said. As they age, people with the disorder also can suffer from kidney and gastrointestinal disorders, anxiety and depression, Monkaba said.

"As a result of this tragedy, North Park Elementary will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday and Del Vallejo Middle School will serve as a temporary location to provide counseling and support services to North Park staff members, parents and students on Tuesday and Wednesday", the school district said in a statement.

The superintendent said the Martinez family wanted to honor Jonathan's memory by getting the word out about Williams syndrome.

Anderson said nothing as he began firing a large-caliber revolver, according to police.

"I thought I would die that night", she told authorities.

"I heard him load a gun", Brianna said, speaking softly from the back seat of the auto in the parking lot of a middle school where counselors were seeing families.

Then she waited hours outside a nearby high school where parents were eventually reunited with their children. The note would not have been alarming if not for this violent event, he said.

"She loved on kids".

"I think this would have been just been too traumatic for him to be here", she said.

Teachers hugged one another and wiped away tears as they returned to the school Tuesday to retrieve their belongings. Gutierrez brought his grandson back to the school to show him how community members were coming together after the shooting and to reinforce that the school is safe.

"He doesn't really know what happened", she said.
