NC Cities Land NCAA Championship Games, None In Charlotte

Charlotte to learn its future on NCAA championships Tuesday

Among them are several in North Carolina, including a 2019 women's basketball regional in Greensboro, a 2019 men's basketball sub-regional in Raleigh, a 2020 men's basketball sub-regional in Greensboro and the 2021 NCAA swimming & diving championships in Greensboro.

Stay on top of breaking news stories with the ABC11 News AppIn total, North Carolina cities and universities submitted 133 bids to host NCAA events, with an estimated economic impact of $250 million.

Greensboro will host women's basketball tournament games in 2019, and men's tournament games in 2020. The decision comes almost three weeks after Republican and Democratic lawmakers reached a compromise to repeal HB2, which barred transgender people from using public restrooms that match their gender identity.

The compromise measure says only the General Assembly.and not municipalities.can regulate access to public restrooms, showers and changing rooms.

HB142 still allows for anti-LGBTQ discrimination in private employment and public accommodations, and leaves trans bathroom rights up to a hostile state government, barring local governments and schools from making such rules. North Carolina got what it needed from the NCAA on Tuesday, but not what it deserved.

"Working with our valued host institutions and conferences, as well as sports commissions and cities, to create a great atmosphere for student-athletes, coaches and fans with the men's and women's basketball tournaments is our goal every year", said Dan Gavitt, NCAA senior vice president of basketball.

Big Show Slammed On 'Raw,' Breaks the Ring!
He says that he loved the ending of the show, with Braun Strowman suplexing Big Show and collapsing the ring. WWE announced the following match as the main event for tonight's Smackdown Live television show.

"We had hoped that the NCAA would stand with the LGBT community".

The NCAA, along with other sports organizations, corporations and performers, pulled games from the state last spring after passage of the controversial law, which limited protections for LGBT individuals.

HB 142 is not an HB2 repeal, and replaces one discriminatory, anti-transgender, bathroom bill with another. Under HB 142, North Carolina universities are prohibited from ensuring LGBTQ participants and spectators are protected from discrimination during university events.

North Carolina was awarded 10 different NCAA Division I events on Tuesday.

Equality NC is a statewide organization working to secure equal rights and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer North Carolinians. It's a shame to see that those concerns have already fallen by the wayside, ' said James Esseks, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's LGBT and HIV Project.

"I believe that the insinuation by the NCAA that they are rewarding us for good behavior is an insult to the people of North Carolina", Brody said in a statement after the NCAA's announcement that bids from North Carolina would be considered again.
