Man accused of Facebook video killing said he 'just snapped'

Search For Facebook Killer Continues

Officials acknowledged that they did not know where the man was and announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

But Stephens remains at large as the hunt for him expanded nationwide, police said.

The police chief said: "We are not going to pinpoint a specific thing and say this is what triggered this, because we don't know".

Police in OH urged residents in surrounding states on Monday to be on alert for a man who they said shot and killed an elderly passerby seemingly at random and then posted a gruesome video of the killing on Facebook.

In the video, Stephens told Godwin a woman's name and said, "She's the reason that this is about to happen to you". The chase lasted 2 miles before Stephens took his own life, police said.

"We want this to end with as much peace as we can bring to this right now, and we want him to turn himself in", Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams told reporters, adding that local authorities were working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and regional law enforcement.

The break in the case came when police received a tip that Stephens' vehicle was in the McDonald's parking lot in Erie, in the northwestern corner of the state, about 100 miles east of Cleveland, authorities said.

Police said there is no evidence that Stephens is outside Ohio.

But police later said "there is no indication that the subject is at that location, or anywhere in the city of Philadelphia".

Pennsylvania State Police say the suspect in the random killing of a Cleveland retiree posted on Facebook has shot and killed himself after a brief pursuit. In January, four black people in Chicago were accused of attacking an 18-year-old disabled white man and broadcasting the assault on the social media site while making anti-white racial taunts. In the first, uploaded at 2.09pm EDT on Sunday (2am Singapore time), he said he meant to commit murder. In less than 24 hours, the page had exceeded that goal, raising more than US$33,000 - including US$4500 in a single hour.

State police say Steve Stephens was spotted Tuesday morning by state police in Erie County, in the state's northwest corner.

"Can you do me a favour?" he said to Godwin before asking him to say the name Joy Lane. "This is what we would consider a national search for Steve", Williams said on Monday.

The behavioral health agency where he worked said an extensive background check before he was hired turned up nothing worrisome.

He helped them gain job skills and find employment, said Beech Brook spokeswoman Nancy Kortemeyer.

Stephens took the position in April of 2015, after working as a youth mentor at Beech Brook.

Through their tears, several of Godwin's children said they held no animosity toward Stephens.

The video appears to show a man, identified by the police as Steve Stephens, 37 years old, approaching a 74-year-old man and killing him.

Facebook said it removed the video of the shooting 23 minutes after learning of it.

The victim's son, Robert Godwin Jr., told Cleveland.com that he can't bring himself to watch the video.

At the same time, police found themselves with no signal from the suspect's phone and no Global Positioning System signal coming from any device in the auto.
