ISIS death toll from U.S. 'mother of all bombs' climbs to 94

"Fortunately there is no report of civilians being killed in the attack", Khogyani told AP.

The strike targeted a network of fortified underground tunnels that IS had been using to stage attacks on government forces in Nangarhar province, near the Pakistan border, said the report.

The U.S. military strategically dropped a 21,600-pound GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb from a C-130 Hercules on what it called the "right target" in the eastern Afghanistan on Thursday night.

In Achin village, about 5 kilometres from the remote, mountainous area where the bomb was dropped, witnesses said the ground shook, but homes and shops appeared unaffected.

The Afghan presidential palace said precautions were taken to avoid civilian casualties.

Local district chief Mohammad Ismail Shinwari said no civilian casualties were inflicted as civilians living in the area of the bombing had been evacuated by the Afghan military.

Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal, Afghanistan's ambassador to Pakistan, tweeted, "I find the use of the largest non-nuclear bomb, the so-called "mother of all bombs", on our soil reprehensible & counterproductive".

"Certainly there's a signaling element as a by-product - possibly being a signal to Syria or North Korea; certainly there is a signal to ISIS that no matter how much you try to hide, no matter how deep you dig, we can still get you", said Mark Cancian, a retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel and ordnance specialist.

The commander of the U.S. forces in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson, defended the use of the bomb and confirmed the target of the strike was the network of tunnels that IS fighters use to move around and protect themselves from Afghan and United States forces.

Polls suggest that the 58-year-old Barghouti is the most popular choice among Palestinians to succeed the 82-year-old Abbas. Strikers are demanding access to phones, better visitation and improved medical care inside the prisons .

He said a clearance operation was continuing. The US government's top watchdog on Afghanistan said earlier this year that the Afghan government controls less than 60 per cent of the country.

The bombing came only a week after United States president Donald Trump ordered missile strikes against Syria in retaliation for a suspected chemical attack, and as China warned of the potential for conflict amid rising U.S. tensions with North Korea.

Trump said Thursday the bombing was "another successful job".

The bombing triggered shock waves in Afghanistan. "The Taliban continues to sit pretty".

IS has made inroads into Afghanistan in recent years, attracting disaffected members of the Pakistani and Afghan Taliban as well as Uzbek Islamists.

According to Washington, the MOAB was dropped to destroy a system of underground tunnels and caves in Nangarhar, thought to be used by Daesh terrorists.

In just the last week, Trump has overseen the use of some of the most powerful weaponry in the U.S. arsenal.

The bomb's destructive power, equivalent to 11 tonnes of TNT, pales in comparison with the relatively small atomic bombs dropped on Japan at the end of World War II, which had blasts equivalent to between 15,000 and 20,000 tonnes of TNT. Another person was wounded when a second bomb exploded in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand, he said.
