Indian businessman Vijay Mallya arrested in London

India Tv- Vijay Mallya's last tweet before his arrest

A characteristically insouciant tweet marked Mallya's reaction to today's developments: "Usual Indian media hype".

A special Indian court in June declared the former beer baron Mallya a proclaimed offender in a loan case paving the way for banks to take over his properties.

Absconding businessman and liquor baron Vijay Mallya was arrested in London on behalf of the Indian authorities in relation to accusations of fraud, said the Scotland Yard. He was whisked away to a local police station from where he was taken to the Westminster Magistrates' Court that opened on Tuesday after the long Easter weekend. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from India will then put in a request to extradite Mallya to India.

Vijay Mallya may have thought he got away from the cops when he fled India past year with a debt of ₹9000 crores in loans. The next hearing of the case will be on May 17.

An Indian government request for Mallya's deportation had been rejected earlier this year.

A Met Police spokesman said: "Officers from the Metropolitan Police's Extradition Unit have arrested a man on an extraction warrant".

".but within one hour, Vijay Mallya got bail". He told the bench that Mallya had breached court orders and his refusal to bring back the money had aggravated the breach and he should be directed to appear personally before the court.

Mallya who fled to United Kingdom almost a year ago, is wanted for non-repayment of loans and advances to the tune of almost Rs 9000 crore to various Indian banks and institutions. "So, the government should stop misleading the people of India", Surjewala added.

The arrest comes weeks after Indian finance minister Arun Jaitley had indicated that Mallya's extradition would feature in his talks during his visit to the UK. His now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines owes more than Rs 9,000 crore to many banks.
