French police thwart attack days before election

The French interior minister says police have arrested two suspected radicals who were allegedly preparing

Marine Le Pen was accused of reviving the toxic past of the National Front today after lurching further right in a bid to bolster her flagging presidential campaign.

Pledging a drastic crackdown on immigration, she said she would suspend all visas for non-Europeans seeking to join family members in France.

Top presidential contenders Emmanuel Macron and Francois Fillon have offered congratulations to French police after the arrest of two suspected radicals who were allegedly preparing a terror attack in France.

The chant brought claims that after years of trying to distance itself from his antisemitic image, the National Front was now moving closer to him again.

"The fact that he appeals for charity, for welcoming others, foreigners, does not shock me", Le Pen said.

The first round of France's election is set for Sunday.

"I have heard what they have said, and therefore my partner Louis Aliot or my niece would l be given a role as a minister in government".

It warned main candidates in the ballot of a threat to their security, according to campaign officials.

"There has been a real tightening of the race with four candidates between 19 percent and 23 percent", he added.

French media has described Ms Le Pen's partner as "withdrawn from the presidential campaign".

Melenchon and his holograms used Tuesday's rallies to hammer home his programme, which includes huge spending increases and a pledge to renegotiate all European Union treaties, to crowds totalling 35,000 people across France, his team said.

Left-wing daily Liberation called it "one of the most hardline speeches of her campaign", aimed at satisfying grassroots supporters.

Molins said the Marseille suspects met in 2015, while sharing a prison cell for petty crime.

"The photos were passed to my security service from Thursday", Le Pen told AFP.

"We are going to turn the page on the last 20 years because our generation is ready for change", he said.

Polls suggest more than a quarter of voters have yet to decide who they will support. But voters appear to be warming to his message that he is a safe pair of hands in an election of largely untested candidates.

Fillon has been charged over allegations he gave his wife Penelope a fictional job as his parliamentary assistant for which she earned almost 680,000 euros (S$1 million) in public money.
