Boston Marathon retires Bib 261 for women's pioneer Switzer

Kathrine Switzer in 1967, as a race official tries to get her off course during the Boston Marathon.

Runners from all across America competed in the Boston Marathon on Monday, four years after terrorists sought to break the American spirit using bombs.

But while Gibb seemed to pass unnoticed during the run, race director Jock Semple was infuriated and went after Switzer midrace.

Rupp, a three-time Olympian making his Boston debut, was 21 seconds behind and Japan's Suguru Osako was another 30 seconds back.

"I just ran the fastest marathon I've run in 46 years", she told TODAY, having finished the 26.2-mile course in 4 hours, 44 minutes and 31 seconds.

Sanders on Clinton's 'I'm with Her' Slogan: 'It's So Phony'
Mrs Clinton then called Mr Trump, stating the two words that had seemed unthinkable to her supporters: "Congratulations Donald". To this end, she had a trusted aide access the campaign's server and download the e-mails sent and received by top staffers.

The Boston Marathon finally began admitting women in 1972, and Switzer's run is widely credited with forcing the change. While entering with initials so the organizers wouldn't suspect she was female, they quickly spotted her during the race and tried to rip her bib numbers off.

In a Facebook post following the race on Monday, Switzer triumphantly wrote, "I finished, like I did 50 years ago".

Keflezighi, who plans to retire from racing after the New York City marathon in November, stopped after his victory to touch the hand of Bill Richard, whose 8-year-old son Martin was the youngest person to die in the bombing. "I was not only pushed by that tailwind, but also buoyed by the crowd". And the enigmatic vaporwave prankster James Ferraro has recorded a piece of music inspired by the Marathon, a 13-minute instrumental suite titled simply Fanfare For The Boston Marathon 2017.

Jimmy Golen has covered the Boston Marathon for The Associated Press since 1995.
