Australia abolishes visa programme used largely by Indians

The controversial program was widely used across WA through the mining boom

On Tuesday, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced that his government was abolishing a temporary worker visa programme that would affect around 95,000 foreign workers-the majority of them Indians.

"We are an immigration nation but the fact remains: Australian workers must have priority for Australian jobs", Turnbull said.

"Australians must have priority for Australian jobs - so we're abolishing the 457 visas", he said.

The Centre is looking into "consequences" of Australia's decision to curb its 457 work visa policy, used by over 95,000 foreign workers - a lot of them Indians.

The new visa will be subject to work experience and English language tests for workers, and labour market testing to prove jobs cannot be filled locally. The majority of the visa holders are from India, followed by the United Kingdom and China. He said that a new version of the visa programme will focus on recruiting only the "best and the brightest".

To reign the unemployment issues in the country, the Australian government has also taken the stance of "Australian first" in regard to feed the market demand with local resources.

The marketing industry is one of the most prolific users of the 457 Visa scheme. Marketing specialist was again the third-highest nomination occupation for primary 457 Visa holders over that period.

The Australian PM said that the move to abolish the visa, now used by more than 95,000 temporary foreign workers, aims at tackling the growing unemployment in the country.

"If we're serious about getting Australians into skilled jobs, we must also revitalise our neglected vocational education and training system which has been treated like the poor cousin of the universities".

Turnbull stressed that migration was an integral part of the Australian story and its success had helped the nation to become the world's most successful multicultural nation.

"Are they going into schools looking for young kids to go and work in jobs?"

There have been long-running concerns over exploitation of 457 visa holders - who depend on their employer to remain in Australia - and over labour market testing.

Australia's 457 visa was created to address shortages of local workers in certain skilled professions. They argue that skilled-worker visas fulfill their intended goal: allowing companies to fill positions for which locals with the requisite qualifications can't be found.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, stepped in to support the change, claiming credit for the governments move to adopt the party's policies.
