STATE OF ADDICTION: DEA hosting National Prescription Drug Take Back Day
The DEA discourages disposing of the prescription drugs by flushing them down the toilet or just throwing them in the trash, due to safety and health hazards. The service is free and anonymous. Local residents can bring prescriptions to the CVS Pharmacy, located at 2782 Cobb Parkway in Kennesaw.
The Drug Take-Back is presented by the Williamson County Anti-Drug Coalition (WCADC), Brentwood Police Department, Franklin Police Department, Nolensville Police Department, Spring Hill Police Department, Williamson County Sheriff Department, Walgreens and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The Take Back at the Oneida County sites are from 10:00 a.m.to 2:00 p.m.
Last October, Newport Beach was one of almost 5,200 sites throughout the country that participated in another Take-Back Day. The last Take-Back Initiative was very successful with over 100 pounds of medication turned in for destruction, police said. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
The event allows residents to get rid of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.
The collection is done anonymously, as the meds are dumped in a box and you take the bottle back with you. Overall, in a span of 12 years, the DEA and law enforcement partners have collected a total of over 7.1 million pounds of pills.
Most of the collection sites are at police departments, but not all. This is the largest volume to be tallied in Windsor County. The box would allow anyone to drop off prescription drugs any time of the day or night.
