ICE Yields Results: Immigration Arrests Reach Record High

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has doubled the number of arrests for undocumented immigrants without criminal records, and immigration arrests have risen by 32.6 percent under the Trump administration.

ICE's Atlanta office arrested the most immigrants who had never committed any crimes, with almost 700 arrests, up from 137 the prior year. But the 2017 numbers under the Trump administration are dwarfed by the numbers of arrests made in 2014, when ICE made 29,238 arrests - almost 8,000 of which were of undocumented immigrants who had not been convicted of a crime. Philadelphia officers have arrested six times as many immigrants without criminal records as they did the previous year. As WaPo noted, the number of immigration arrests in Trump's first two months is far below the total over the same time period in 2014 when the Obama administration arrested 29,238 illegal immigrants. According to one report last month, an immigration official told CNN that the agency was purposefully targeting areas with "sanctuary city" policies. "‶However, as [Homeland Security] Secretary [John F.] Kelly has made clear, ICE will no longer exempt classes or categories of removable aliens from potential enforcement".

Overall, deportations were down by 1.2 per cent, to 54,741 in January, February and March, compared to the same period a year ago.

"We are very appreciative of the continued confidence placed in our company by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement", George C. Zoley, GEO's chairman and CEO, said in a statement. This was a shift from what he said on the campaign trail, when he called for a stricter policy on all undocumented immigrants.

Talk-radio host Alex Jones argues persona in custody dispute
Lawyers for both Jones and his wife, who are under a gag order, did not respond to requests for comment on Monday. Jones has frequently hosted Trump adviser Roger Stone, and some prominent politicians, such as U.S.

Adam Housley reported this morning that ICE detainers - requests to local authorities to hold criminal aliens - are up 75 percent, to more than 22,000. Most of it has to do with politics.

"It's all got to do with the president", said Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, a Republican who said he voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton in the presidential election.

Still, the numbers indicate Trump is making good on campaign promises.

Joanne Lin, senior legislative counsel with the ACLU told the Post, "I think the instruction is, "Go about your business" in terms of apprehending immigrants. It's wherever they can find them".
