Apple receives permit to test self-driving cars on California roads

Apple Inc (AAPL) has secured a permit to test autonomous vehicles in California, the state Department of Motor Vehicles said on Friday.

Apple's competitors have already been testing autonomous vehicles.

The thing is, the permit is for the cars themselves, but actually applies to the technology behind the self-driving capability of those cars. Apple's Project Titan, at one point was believed to have over 1000 employees that were working on it.

The secretive company that it is, little is known about the autonomous skills of Apple's software, but in a letter past year to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Apple said it was "investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation, and is excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation".

The permit does not necessarily mean Apple is building a vehicle. The autonomous vehicle service.

We should discover more about it, as the permit needs public reporting of crashes involving the test vehicles and how frequently they need human intervention.

In addition, Apple has six drivers permitted to operate the vehicles.

The company was "excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation", it said at the time.

Encountering self-driving cars in California is a daily occurrence for those living around Silicon Valley.

As it is now reported, Apple became the 30 company to be granted a self-driving auto testing permit.

An Apple spokesperson declined to comment directly on the filing, pointing back to a statement the company made in November when it wrote to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on the subject of regulating self-driving vehicles.
