The Latest Bombing In Syria Hit Stranded Evacuees

An explosion has hit a bus convoy carrying evacuees near the Syrian city of Aleppo, killing at least 100 people, according the opposition rescue service.

The Syrian Civil Defence, also known as the White Helmets, said they removed 100 bodies from the scene of the explosion.

The blast hit the Rashidin area on Aleppo's outskirts, where dozens of buses carrying mostly Shi'ite residents of two villages that are being evacuated in a deal between warring sides were waiting to enter the city. At least 39 people have been killed, according to Syrian state TV.

More than 5,000 people who had lived under the crippling siege for more than two years left the two towns, along with 2,200 evacuated from rebel-held Madaya and Zabadani, on Friday.

Syria state TV reported the transfer process resumed hours after the explosion, with dozens of wounded transported.

SDF fighters are within a few hundred metres (yards) of Tabqa, said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group. In a footage aired by a local network - Syrian TV - bodies were strewn outside buses, including fighters.

More than 400,000 people have been killed and millions more displaced since the Syrian conflict erupted with protests against Syrian regime leader Bashar al Assad in March 2011.

Buses carrying Syrians, evacuated from the towns al-Foua and Kefraya, arrive at Aleppo's Ramousseh crossing as they make their way to a makeshift shelter in Jibrin on the eastern outskirts of Aleppo, on April 15, 2017, as part of a deal between the militants and the Syrian government. A Facebook page belonging to the pro-government Foua and Kfraya villages said all those in three buses were killed or are still missing while a rebel official said at least 30 opposition fighters who were guarding the evacuees were killed in the blast.

"The people are restless and the situation is disastrous", said Ahmed Afandar, a resident evacuated from his the opposition area near Madaya.

Thousands of evacuees had been stuck on the road because of a disagreement over the number of rebels allowed to leave two other towns included in the deal.

It is still unclear who carried out the bombing attack, but tensions had been heightened after an evacuation deal had been halted, leaving those in transit in danger.

On Saturday, those from Madaya sat outside rows of coaches in a bus garage in government-held Aleppo, waiting to move onto Idlib, pictures sent by a pro-opposition activist showed.

The population transfer deal has been criticized by opponents as forced displacement and was not overseen by the United Nations.
