It's a boy! April the giraffe gives birth to a male calf

April The Giraffe Update Zoo Keepers Say “She’s Out Of It”

HARPURSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — A NY zoo's livestream video of its pregnant giraffe is showing that she is apparently giving birth.

If you remember, a live video feed of a very pregnant April was started back in February.

Giraffes are in labor for about 15 months and give birth while standing.

April, who had been due to give birth in January or February at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, in western NY, was pregnant for at least 16 months, compared with the typical gestation period of 15 months, according to zoo officials.

Jordan Patch, owner of the Animal Adventure Park, says the natural curiosity surrounding giraffes and their birthing process has been a huge factor in drawing crowds.

The latest craze featured April the Giraffe, an online sensation whose pregnancy has been a story of public interest for months. The calf will then move on to another zoo.

The park is now closed to the public and will open in mid-May. People around the world have been tuning in daily. The baby's father, five-year-old Oliver, watched from an adjacent pen.

The privately owned zoo began livestreaming from April's enclosure in February.

April has her own website and even a clothing line. April is 15 years old.

After a few hours of labor, the new calf fell hoof-and-head first into the world just before 10 a.m.

Since February, the live feed provided by AAP attracted millions across the USA and in many parts of the world.

The weight of the newborn is unknown, but a calf at birth is usually about 6 feet tall and weighs a whopping 100 to 150 pounds.

Animal Adventure is in rural Harpursville, New York.
